Artist's Statement

Riley Costa is a multimedia digital artist from Boca Raton (FL). Her art integrates clay and digital imagery to create animated collages. Riley is expected to receive her Bachelor in Fine Arts from the Cleveland Institute of Art in 2020. Her work has been in such exhibitions as Gender? I Hardly Know Her!, and The Small Works Juried Exhibition. She is also experienced in providing commissions for companies such as Twin Sisters Digital Media. She is currently working in Cleveland (OH).

Animation and Ceramics are two art forms that many would assume are unrelated in separate in almost every aspect, but they are actually quite similar. They both traditionally value craft and functionality. Both require a steady, consistent hand and a lot of repetition. Both necessitate an understanding of arcs and curves to create things pleasing to the eye, and most importantly; they both mess up your spine and give you horrible posture! My work utilizes the similarities and differences between the clay and the pixel to create digital and sculptural works that bounce ideas off of each other in a playful and visually distinct manner. The imagery of clumpy hand-coiled pots, jpeg artifacts, loosely drawn checkers and vibrant, conflicting colors are meant to convey a relinquishing of personal standards for quality that would have stopped me from animating or sculpting or creating music in the past. My work should hopefully encourage viewers to create art outside of their area of skill, with the understanding that it doesn’t have to turn out good as long as it was fun to make.
